Dear Parents,
Thank you for attending our classroom awards ceremony today. It was a great chance to honor the students for their hard work this year. Several students were absent today and they will receive their awards next week. Students, congratulations on your special recognition! I hope it inspires you to keep working hard.
I got the results from the SATs this week and they look really good. Mrs. Barber was very pleased with how our grade performed. The students as a whole improved a grade and two months worth of learning which is great. The results will be mailed home along with the last report card. Remember, if you did well keep working hard, if you didn’t do as well it doesn’t mean that you aren’t smart. Sometimes students who have good grades do not do well because of other circumstances such as distractions, hunger, fatigue, etc.
Our last class party of the year will be an early summer birthday party. We’re going to start the party at 11:45. We’ll have pizza, so that can be your lunch if that is what you choose. Students who have summer birthdays, feel free to bring in other treats for the party such as drinks, fruit, vegetables, or baked goods. If you’re going to bring something let me know so we don’t have too many of the same thing.
Next week is our last week! It will be filled with many fun activities. The last day of school party is from 9:30-11:45. It will include fun activities such as an inflatable rock climbing wall, D.J. music, games, food, and water-based tattoos. Pizza will be on sale for $2.00 a slice. Students can wear free dress on the last day, June 12th. Remember to dress modestly (girls: no short shorts, low-cut tops, spaghetti straps, etc.) If you have questions about the free dress rules please refer to your school handbook or see me.
We are all done with formal testing! The last test, the history test on explorers, was today. Next week we will be doing minimal amounts of “real” work scattered in with some fun activities. Please let me know if you are not going to be here any of the days next week so I can make sure to say goodbye and give out any work that I have.
It has been a pleasure being your teacher this year! You are a class of great students and parents and I will miss you all next year. Don’t forget to come by and say hi to me next year.
Thank you for all the parents who have helped out so much this year. A special thanks goes to Mrs. Robertson for being our room mom. She was the one that pushed to have special parties and to do some of the crafts that the students made this year. She spent a lot of hours making this year fun for all of us. Thank you!
Thank you also to those of you who came in during various parties, who chaperoned field trips, who brought or spent in food, who came to decorate for Spider Day, and all of the other things that I can’t think of right now. Each parent has made a contribution to our class this year and I am so appreciative of it and blessed by it.
I pray that this summer will be a good one for each of your families.
God bless,
Miss Schenk
Dear Parents,
I hope you all had a great Memorial Day weekend. This week was short and it really went fast. We only have one more whole week this school year! Field Day on Tuesday was a great way to come back from the long weekend. I had a lot of fun taking pictures and the class had a lot fun participating in all of the activities. Congratulations to the red team who was 1st place! Everyone did really well. Each of the four teams had the highest score at one of the areas which means it was a very equal competition.
This week we had a science test, language quiz, and spelling test. I don’t think all of them will be ready for Friday folders. Expect to get at least one of them next week.
On Monday June 2nd we have an all school chapel first thing in the morning in the Cathedral. Full dress is required.
A lot of people have been asking for extra credit. I have given out math and language extra credit packets. For each page that a student has completed they will receive two points added to their overall score. If a student were to complete all of the language pages they would receive 40 points which could move their grade up quite a bit. In math it is possible to earn up to 60 points. The only catches are that 1) the work needs to be accurate. I won’t count off for an error or two here and there, but if the overall quality is poor no points will be awarded. 2) There are some concepts, especially in math, that we may not have covered yet and I will not be tutoring on how to do them. Students have the option to either skip the pages they do not understand, ask someone else to teach them, or try to read about it in future math lessons. All extra credit is due Tuesday June 3rd. Good luck!
Tuesday June 3rd we are taking our Unit 3 Bible test. This test will cover people and events we had been studying, especially focusing on the lives of David and Solomon. We will review on Monday, but it’s a good idea to review on your own over the weekend.
Thursday June 5th is the Bible verse test on Proverbs 2:6-8. Each student needs to write the verse 5 times, and it is due the day of the test.
Next Friday, June 6th, is the day of our classroom awards. We will have a short school family in the gym followed by awards in our classroom. I hope you will plan to be here as your student is recognized for his or her hard work this year. Pins will be awarded in such categories as creative writing, language, math, science, and spelling.
We are wrapping up our last history topic which is explorers. We have our chapter 4 test on Friday June 6th. This will be the last history test of the year so study hard!
These last few weeks will be hectic but hang in there!
God bless,
Miss Schenk
Field Day is this coming Tuesday May 27th. Our class will be divided into four teams and will compete in different athletic activities during the morning. I would suggest that you have your child put on sunscreen and that they bring a bottle of water with them for that time.
This week is our last spelling test which is on list 34. We don’t have school Monday, but our test will still be on Thursday.
For math this week we have combined some lessons. We have covered all of the material that is in our curriculum guide for fourth grade. There are additional lessons in the book that we will cover this year. Some of these topics will only give students a taste of the skills that they will learn at the beginning of 5th grade. At this point I’m not concerned with total mastery. The goal is for them to at least be familiar with some of these topics.
In Language we just had a chapter test about adverbs. We are doing a short chapter on prepositions. There will be a small quiz on prepositions on Thursday May 29th. We will then be moving on to unit 14 “using words correctly.” Students will be completing the unit in between, the dictionary unit, on their own in class. We have already done some dictionary work their year which I want the students to review, but as a whole class, I think the “using words correctly” section will be more valuable.
Upcoming Dates:
Monday May 26th- No School- Memorial Day
